galentines day 2019: how and why to host your own

Happy Galentine's Day!!!

This amazing nonofficial holiday originated from Leslie Knope, the hilarious, kind, and loving star of Parks and Recreation. She essentially invented a a better Valentines day, a day to celebrate the female friendships in our lives.

As she puts it, "Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It's like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas."

I've hosted Galentine's day a few times before, and to say I love it is an understatement. It's becoming a tradition that I know I will carry on long into my future. I love hosting my friends and celebrating how much their friendship means to me!

So, if you want to host your own Galentine's day this year (which you totally should!), or you just want to read about how I celebrate, keep on reading!

Step 1: Invitations
I love sending cards and invitations the old-fashioned way: in the mail. Sending a fun group text is great, but I think sending or even just handing out homemade invites can be a fun and creative way to change things up. This year, I got simple, but beautiful blank blush pink cards from Blick Art Supplies and addressed them with a simple "galentines day" and a heart with all the details inside. Make sure to let your friends know what the day is all about in the card!

Step 2: Decor
I love decorating, and although it's definitely not the most important part of any party, it can add a lot. Target has so many inexpensive options, including these super cute "love" and "xoxo" balloon letters! I also would recommend cute paper plates, silverware, napkins etc. to create a cohesive theme and make for easy clean up. You can also make a super simple photo booth by hanging a plastic tablecloth and some decorations on your wall!
Step 3: Menu
In true Leslie Knope fashion, I went for waffles as the main dish. Who doesn't love a good waffle? My mom also made french toast muffins and mini heart-shaped sausages! The one food I was in charge of making was dessert- which honestly didn't end very well considering I have no talent in the kitchen. But.... here is the recipe for the dessert I attempted! *key word attempted  link!
Make the meal simple and fun and don't overthink your menu choices!

Step 4: Activities & Party Favors
I think it's important to have some sort of activity planned, however big or small! This year, I got  cute mini wood ornaments from Target and we painted them with fun colors. It was a super simple and fun craft that was perfect to do during the post-breakfast food coma.
After a craft, I would recommend a movie or show (you could even watch the galentine's parks and rec episode (seas. 2 ep 16!!!) I also think funny or sweet rom-coms are perfect for the occasion, but watch whatever your group likes! We watched La La Land this year, which is my favorite movie of all time (but definitely be prepared with tissues!!!) p.s. anything with Ryan Gosling is probably perfect for your festivities.
Party favors are totally optional, but I always think it's fun to send your guests home with something they'll love. I find good traits of a party favor include: small, unique, personal, and even homemade!

Step 5: Gather together and celebrate
Galentine's Day is all about spending time with the gals in your life and letting them know that you love them to death. Celebrate your friendship and make it a great time.

xx, gracie
